History
Past:
The Slaton Bakery is one of the oldest bakeries in the state. The Bakery started operations in 1923 when two local bakeries consolidated. From 1923 to 1943 the Bakery changed owners no less than 10 times. Barney and Ollie Mae Wilson purchased the Bakery from Mr. R.D. Hickman in 1943. Barney and Ollie Mae operated the Bakery from 1943-1973, when a lease agreement was formed with their youngest son, Sherrell. A few years later he and his new bride, Robin, purchased the Bakery and has operated it until present. The Bakery was in numerous locations around Slaton. In 1983 the Wilson's purchased the location in which it now occupies, which ironically enough was the original location of the Bakery.
Over the years the Bakery has been primarily a retail establishment, but in the early years it was also a wholesale bread factory. In fact, The Slaton Bakery introduced sliced hamburger and hot dog buns to the state of Texas, much to the dismay of the large bread companies, who soon followed with their versions of pre-sliced products. In the late 1940's and 50's came the advent of bread factories, which today supply all the supermarkets, and all but annihilated the mom and pop bakeries around the country. When you stop by our shop, you may want to check out our "museum" located in the dining room. Featured in there is an original display case filled with various, artifacts, that were used over the years in the Bakery.
Present:
Today The Slaton Bakery is a very respected bakery on the South Plains as well as most of the country. We have a register book and the names come from almost all of the 50 states and, at last count, 54 different countries. Many of the locals, who have R.V.'s, tell us stories of them pulling into a R.V. park in Colorado or New Mexico, and talking with the travelers who have been to The Slaton Bakery, and plan on making a return visit. If you are from out of town and stop by, be sure to take a glance at the registry, and then add your name to the list. One product we are well known for is our wedding cakes, and a interesting occurrence is making 50th anniversary cakes for couples to whom we also made their wedding cake.

This is one day of production for a large order we received. In one week's time we produced almost 30,000 cookies for this single order. The pictures below show about 700 dozen cookies, ranging from Sugar Cookies, to Peanut Butter, to Chocolate Chip, and Pecan Sandies. In the picture each rack is loaded down with 40 pans and each pan has around 30 cookies on it.
